On the finale of American Idol on Wednesday night, the contestants and surprise musical guests weren’t the only ones performing.

Ryan Seacrest also made good on a promise he had made to sing, and he chose a track from one of his favorites, “Right Here Waiting” by Richard Marx (Watch it below).

And on Thursday morning, Richard called in to On Air with Ryan Seacrest to talk about the moment and how Ryan did.

So why did Richard duet with Ryan, asked Ellen K.

After some laughing, he explained, “In all seriousness, he’s always been incredibly gracious to me, and it’s kind of cool … I was the first concert you ever went to on a date. That’s a really cool thing.”

Right before Ryan went onstage, “he was really nervous,” adds Richard. “I said, ‘Dude, no one expect you to be any good. It’s all gravy.’”

Richard’s new album, Beautiful Goodbye, is out July 8. Pre-order it on iTunes here … and for tour information, check out his site here!
