The Cannes International Film Festival was cancelled due to COVID-19 but the festival has gone forward and released its official selections for 2020 in celebration of their creative accomplishments and to still help the films find distribution which has always been one of the festival’s primary functions.
There are typically different categories for the various films chosen, but this year they’ve decided to just announce all 56 movies in a single list.
And the unique situation isn’t the only reason these movies are making history — there’s also a record breaking number of female-led and first-time director films.
Among the honorees are new films by Wes Anderson and Viggo Mortensen’s directorial debut and Ammonite starring Kate Winslet.
