Grey's Anatomy's Eric Dane was recently diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS.
The star, who plays Mark Everett Sloan, M.D., F.A.C.S. (aka McSteamy) in the beloved medical drama series, opened up about his health in an interview with People on Thursday (April 10). He revealed that he will continue working and would like privacy as he navigates this unpredictable new chapter.
"I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter. I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time."
Dane is father to two children, Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13, and has been married to wife Rebecca Gayheart since 2004, per People. The pair split in 2018 but, as of March 2025, have dismissed divorce filings amid hearsay that they've reconciled.
According to The ALS Association, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is "a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord." The disease targets the muscles and the spinal cord and leads to the inability to "speak, eat, move, and breathe."
Despite suffering from an incurable condition, Dane plans to join the Euphoria cast in filming season 3 of the popular series, starting April 14.
